Description

Both microstructural graded and homogenous single-phase α-Sialon is obtained from Si3N4 powder for a broad range of compositions of practical interest. Elongated grains of α-Sialon could be developed in the monophase material by controlled mechanism of nucleation and growth. Tailoring of microstructure was realized through slow transformation reaction from Si3N4 to α-Sialon at lower temperature than sintering temperature when the composition is near the α-Sialon phase boundary. The mechanical properties are strongly correlated with the microstructure and are enhanced greatly in the optimized Sialon composition. (author)
