Review of DOE waste package program. Subtask 1.1. National waste package program, October 1982-March 1983. Vol. 4

Description

The current effort is part of an ongoing task to review the national high-level waste package effort. It includes evaluations of reference waste form, container, and packing material components with respect to determining how they may contribute to the containment and controlled release of radionuclides after waste packages have been emplaced in salt, basalt, and tuff repositories. In the current Biannual Report a section on tuff repository conditions has been included to complement prior work for salt and basalt. Failure/degradation modes for borosilicate glass waste forms, carbon steel containers, and bentonite-based and zeolite-based packing materials (discrete backfills) have been reviewed and the licensing data requirements to demonstrate the degree of compliance with NRC performance objectives specified
