The three categories are described, into which Swiss safety authorities place nuclear power plants according to plant conditions. The differences in criteria used by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Federal Republic of Germany are pointed out. Demands from the NEA and the IAEA relating to serious accidents in Switzerland, in the USA, in the FRG, in France and in Sweden are discussed. 1 fig., 18 refs
