Synergistic extraction of americium(III) by TTA and crown ethers

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., Ibaraki (Japan)

Description

Synergistic extraction of actinide elements by β-diketone and neutral multidentate ligands was studied. This report deals with TTA extraction of Am(III) from 0.1M lithium perchlorate or 0.1M tetramethylammonium perchlorate aqueous phase to benzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, or cyclohexane in the presence of such various crown ethers, CEs, as 12C4, 15C5, 18C6, DC18C6, DB18C6, DC24C8, DB24C8. In determining the extracted species of 1:3:1 complex, Am(TTA)3CE, the synergic equilibrium constants, βs, were determined, the value of which could not be explained on the basis of only the basicity of CEs, and hence, such other factors as the steric effect should be taken into account. The advantage of TTA/CE synergistic extraction in the separation between Am(III) and U(VI) or Th(IV) is discussed
