This paper concentrates on certain kinds of risk that are regulated by society as a whole, with the aim of securing general benefits. It begins by discussing how people normally approach risk. It shows how industrial risks, and in particular nuclear risks, are regulated in the United Kingdom. It explains the nature of the risk from radiation and how risk is calculated when deciding to licence nuclear installations. Facts on figures on such things as risk of death expressed as consequence of an activity, man-made disaster death tolls and the occurrence of major events per year in Great Britain, are given in the appendices.
