Width measurements on neon and nitrogen tracks in Ilford G-5 emulsion
Description
Ilford G-5 nuclear emulsions were exposed to a beam of 280 MeV/nucleon neon and nitrogen nuclei at the Princeton Particle Accelerator. Each emulsion pellicle had dimensions of 7.6 cm X 10.2 cm X 600 μm. The beam particles were oriented to enter the stack parallel to the plane of the pellicle in order that they come to rest in the same pellicle. Individual tracks were picked up at the end of their range and followed upstream using a Koristka MS-2 scattering microscope. The track widths were measured optically every 50 μm. Measurements were found to be in agreement with Katz's track model, particularly with regard to the position and the shape of the peak in track widths. (Auth.)
