Design considerations of heat exchangers for vaporizing fluids

The problems encountered in determining the steady-state operating characteristics of certain types of vapor generating equipment are examined. The first type of equipment considered is the vertical tube reboiler with upward flow. A calculation method applicable to industrial mixtures is described, wherein the evolution of mixture composition along the tube is accounted for. Based on results obtained with an experimental unit of this type, an attempt has been made to develop correlations for the pressure drop and the heat transfer rate that would apply at relatively low pressures (a few bars). Also discussed are falling film, long tube vertical evaporators and a boiling systen often found in certain industrial situations. Methods and results are presented that permit predictions of the heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop. For the case of horizontal, once-through vapour generators at high pressures, the influence of gravity leads to non-symmetrical flow and heat transfer patterns inside the tubes. First results with freon are presented to permit an analysis of this asymmetry, and in addition, to permit examination of the effect of elbows. Finally, the problems associated with boiling outside horizontal or vertical tubes are considered. This study is tied to the operation of low pressure boilers often encountered in sea water desalting units (subatmospheric pressures) and in the chemical industry

On examine les problemes qui se posent dans la determination du fonctionnement en regime permanent de certains types de dispositifs destines a engendrer la vapeur. On considere d'abord le cas des bouilleurs a tubes verticaux avec circulation ascendante et on decrit une methode de calcul applicable aux melanges industriels, prenant en compte, notamment, l'evolution de la composition du melange le long de l'ecoulement. A partir de resultats obtenus sur un dispositif experimental de ce type, on essaye de determiner les lois de perte de charge et de transfert de chaleur applicables dans des conditions de pression relativement basse (quelques bars). On examine ensuite le cas des evaporateurs a longs tubes verticaux ou a film descendant, tres utilises dans un certain nombre d'applications industrielles. On presente des methodes et des resultats permettant de prevoir le coefficient de transfert thermique et la perte de pression. Dans les generateurs de vapeur a haute pression a une passe a tubes horizontaux l'effet de la gravite se traduit par une dissymetrie dans l'ecoulement et dans l'echange de chaleur qui se produisent a l'interieur de ces tubes. On presente les resultats des essais avec du freon dans le but d'examiner cette dissymetrie, ainsi que l'influence des coudes. On considere enfin les problemes d'ebullition a l'exterieur de tubes, verticaux ou horizontaux, lies au fonctionnement des bouilleurs a basse pression tres utilises dans le dessalement de l'eau de mer (pression subatmospherique) et l'industrie chimiqueAdditional details
