Dynamic isotope scanning in upper limb venous thrombosis

  • 1. Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Camperdown (Australia)
  • 2. Manly District Hospital (Australia)

Description

Perfusion scanning of the lung after intravenous administration of a lung capillary specific radiopharmaceutical is a well established investigation for patients with venous thrombosis and suspected pulmonary emboli. When the thrombus source is in the upper limb, the lung scan can be simply extended to include the limb and give additional information regarding the site, size and subsequent behaviour of the original thrombus.
