Description
Fuel defects in the CANDU type reactor, as exemplified by experience at Pickering NGS, are believed to be caused by stress corrosion of the zircaloy sheath, associated with rapid bundle power increases to levels above previous steady-state levels. Incorrect sequencing of adjuster rod withdrawal and localized refuelling to replace defected bundles cause just such conditions. Lubrication of the UO2 pellet with graphite has produced a fuel highly resistant to this failure mode. Defected fuel is located by hand scanning of exit channel feeders for gamma signal during reactor shutdown. (E.C.B.)
