Use of the CTA dosimetric film for minute investigation of absorbed doses in complex materials

The determination of dose distribution during radiation processing of complex materials is important. It allows the optimization of the process. It can be easily determined, either at the surface of the materials or in depth by using the CTA film dosimeter. Two examples are described of such a determination. The first one deals with the case of dose distribution at the surface of complex-shaped products irradiated with low energy electrons. It is shown by using a few elementary facts concerning the electron beam, that it is possible to predict accurately the dose distribution across the surface. In the case of the irradiation of cables and wires, three factors control the overall dose distribution for a given electron energy: depth-dose curve, back scattering and axes of irradiation when a multi-sided irradiation is used. The combination of these factors explains the complex patterns of dose distribution which are observed. The measurements show that the homogeneity of irradiation can vary to a large extent and that the efficiency of the beam energy utilization can therefore be optimized. (author)
