Description

A technique of purification of carbon dioxide for radiocarbon dating, consisting of absorption in ammonium hydroxide, precipitation of calcium carbonate, and evolving of CO2 has been studied to check the presence of isotopic fractionation during this procedure. It was found that this procedure causes depletion of 13C amounting to 3.35 +- 0.5 thousandth, which is equivalent to an additional error in age measurement of 54 +- 8 years. The satisfactory reproducibility of results obtained in individual runs makes it possible to introduce corrections for isotopic fractionation without measurement of delta 13C coefficient for each dated sample.
