On photocatalytic detoxification of water containing volatile organic compounds

Description

This paper presents some insights into solar photocatalytic detoxification of volatile organic compounds based on experimental results. Outdoor photocatalytic oxidation tests were conducted on water containing benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX). TiO2 was used as a catalyst. It was found that photocatalytic oxidation works extremely well for the oxidation of BTEX, however, a large portion may volatilize into air if given a chance. Addition of H2O2, caused little or no increase in the oxidation rate. Dark tests showed some decrease in the concentration of BTEX possibly due to adsorption on the catalyst surface
