The natural sources of ionizing radiation exposure
Description
Natural sources of ionizing radiation include external sources (cosmic rays, natural radionuclides present in the crust of the earth and in building materials) and internal sources (naturally occuring radionuclides in the human body, especially the potassium 40 and radon short lived decay products). The principal ways of human exposure to theses different components in ''normal'' areas are reviewed; some examples of the variability of exposure with respect to different regions of the world or the habits of life are given. Actual estimations of the doses delivered to the organs are presented; for the main contributors to population exposure, the conversion into effective dose equivalent has been made for allowing a better evaluation of their respective importance

Les sources naturelles de rayonnements ionisants comprennent des sources externes (rayons cosmiques, radionucleides du sol et des materiaux de construction) et des sources internes (radionucleides presents naturellement dans l'organisme, en particulier le potassium 40 et les descendants a vie courte du radon). Les principales modalites de l'exposition humaine a ces diverses composantes en zone ''normale'' sont decrites; des exemples de la variabilite de l'exposition suivant les regions ou les habitudes de vie sont donnes a titre de reference. Les estimations actuelles des doses delivrees aux differents organes sont presentees; dans le cas des sources contribuant notablement a l'exposition des populations, la conversion en equivalent de dose effectif a ete effectuee afin de permettre une meilleure evaluation de leur importance respectiveAdditional details
