Nuclear quadrupole interactions of the excited states of 117In and 111Cd in Cd compounds

Description
Time-differential perturbed angular correlation experiments on the excited nuclear levels of ¹¹⁷In and ¹¹¹Cd in Cd compounds show that (i) β decay and (n, γ) reaction aftereffects are absent, and (ii) the ratio of the quadrupole interaction frequency at the Cd and In sites in many cases is a constant independent of the structural type of the compound. We interpret this as evidence for the ionic nature of the Cd and In bonds and derive the quadrupole moment of the 247-keV level of ¹¹¹Cd to be |Q|=0.77(12) b.
