After having outlined the importance of complying with climate-related commitments, the leading role of France in the development of geothermal energy, the high potential of this energy, and evoked the two types of installation (surface geothermal energy, deep geothermal energy), this publication proposes overviews of the various aspects of surface geothermal energy, and of deep geothermal energy for heat production. For each one, it presents and comments principles and usages, innovations, situation of the French production in 2020, national objectives and implemented means, assessment and perspectives. The last part addresses deep geothermal energy and electric power production plants: principles and usages, currently operated geothermal plants generating electricity, development projects, assessment and perspectives
