Description
Flat tensile specimens made of 1.4981 austenitic steel were corroded at 6500C by UOsub(2+x), to which the fission products Cs, I and Te had been added. After reaction, tensile tests were performed with the specimens and the different strength of corroded specimens as compared to non-corroded specimens was correlated to the measured reaction zone. To be able to describe quantitatively the change of mechanical properties of steel as a result of corrosion, a coefficient of effectiveness and a ductility factor were defined. Both were determined as a function of the mechanical-thermal treatment of steel, the reactivity of the corrosion medium, the corrosion depth, the test temperature, and the strain rate. It appears from the test results, that the reaction zone in most cases even contributes to the strength of the precorroded steel. In contrast, the ductility of the precorroded cladding material is affected negatively. (Auth.)
