A simple plunger device and error analysis of nuclear lifetime measurements

  • 1. Comision Nacional de Energia Atomica, Buenos Aires (Argentina). Dept. de Fisica

Description

A simple plunger apparatus for recoil-distance lifetime measurements has been built using commercial modules. A precision induction gauge was used to measure the recoil distance and the target-stopper capacitance method was used to determine the point of closest proximity. The device was tested by measuring the lifetime of the 4+ and 2+ states in 78Kr. The influence of the uncertainties of lifetimes, branching ratios and other intermediate-level parameters on the error of the measured lifetime was studied using a Monte Carlo technique. (orig.)
