On mechanism of corrosion cracking of low-carbon and low-alloyed steels in alkali medium

Description
The tendency of the steels investigated to crack in alkaline media is shown to be governed by passivation of the most active spots of the stressed metal. The reason for enhanced sensitivity of steel to cracking in the narrow interval of the electrode potentials is to be sought in the favourable conditions for highly localized corrosion created by the increased difficulty of forming a dense protective film along the grain boundaries.
