Geobotanical uranium exploration based on bark samples from savanna trees

Description

About one hundred samples of Bosweilia dalzielli and Aformosia laxiflora growing over the Zona uranium mineralisation in the Upper Benue trough, Nigeria, have been analysed using geochemical methods and gamma-ray counting. The distribution of U, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ag, Co and Ni and the specific gamma activity in the samples were studied and compared with ground radiometric maps. U and Pb distribution in Bosweilia dalzielli compares more favourably with the ground radiometric maps and the spatial distribution of the ore zones than in samples of Aformosia laxiflora. These results are supported by gamma-ray counting data, thus suggesting Bosweilia dalzielli as a promising sampling medium for prospecting concealed U mineralisation. 11 refs.; 3 figs.; 1 table
