The development of a packaging and disposal system for the Windscale advanced gas-cooled reactor
Description
The UKAEA are currently engaged in developing equipment and techniques for the dismantling of the 100 MW(Th) Windscale Advanced Gas-Cooled Reactor. As a consequence of decommissioning some 800 tonnes of steel, 300 tonnes of graphite, and 750 tonnes of concrete will need to be contained, transported and disposed of as radioactive waste. Of this about 815 tonnes will be classified as Intermediate Level Waste (ILW) and will be packaged and immobilised within a reinforced concrete container. The design and development of the concrete container to meet the approval of the appropriate Regulatory Bodies is the subject of this paper. (author)
