Study of charge transfer processes in porphyrins- and phthalocyanins-based materials: from the liquid phase to the solid state

In order to efficiently conceive and build supramolecular materials for molecular electronics and optoelectronics, one need to have access to a large data base on the interactions between the elementary pieces of the material. Such a data base can be established only through the study of model Systems and model media. Oligomers of porphyrins and phthalocyanines constitute models of choice: due to the chemical versatility of the compounds, their physical and photophysical properties can be adjusted to produce a targeted function. The first part of this thesis is concerned with double- and triple-Decker mixed porphyrin and Phthalocyanines sandwich compounds of cerium. Then we study the photophysical properties of complexes formed by pairing in solution porphyrins and phthalocyanines bearing oppositely charged substituents. The charge transfer reactions and geminated recombinations are investigated by time-resolved absorption spectroscopy (from the femto- to millisecond time scales) for excited complexes either in solution, or confined in sol-gel matrices or in Langmuir-Blodgett films. The results obtained in the various media are compared and analysed by the Marcus theory. They allow to show that, for strongly coupled complexes, the solvent does not play any key role in the forward and backward electron transfer. We conclude this work by introducing a few targeted projects based on of the photophysical properties of these complexes, namely photodynamic therapy of cancers, nonlinear optics and the generation of photovoltage. Abstract (French)
La conception et la realisation de materiaux supramoleculaires pour l'electronique moleculaire ou l'optoelectronique necessitent la comprehension et la mise en place d'une large base de connaissance sur les modalites d'interaction des pieces elementaires de tels assemblages. Une telle base ne peut etre constituee qu'au travers des etudes de composes et de milieux modeles. Les oligomeres de porphyrines et de phtalocyanines, par leur versatilite chimique qui permet d'ajuster leurs proprietes physico-chimiques en vue d'applications specifiques, constituent des modeles de choix., La premiere partie de cette etude est consacree a des molecules mixtes de porphyrines et de phtalocyanines liees par un ou des ions cerium. Les proprietes photophysiques de complexes de porphyrines et de phtalocyanines lies par interaction de Van der Waals entre les orbitales delocalisees des macrocyles et par interaction coulombienne entre substituants porteurs de charges opposees fait l'objet de la seconde partie. Les transferts et les recombinaisons de charge prenant place lors de la relaxation des etats excites de ces complexes en solution, inclus dans des gels et transferes dans la phase solide par la technique de Langmuir-Blodgett sont etudies en detail par spectroscopie d'absorption resolue temporellement des echelles de temps femtoseconde a microseconde. La comparaison et l'interpretation a l'aide de la theorie de Marcus des resultats de la phase liquide et de l'etat solide permet de mettre en evidence l'absence d'influence du solvant sur ces phenomenes. En conclusion, quelques possibilites d'applications en medecine, en optique non-lineaire et pour la conversion d'un signal lumineux en tension electrique sont evoquees. (auteur)Files
