Observations on the as-welded (GTAW) bend ductility of Mo-13 Re alloy

  • 1. Westinghouse Electric Corp., Pittsburgh, PA

Description

One of the refractory metal alloy compositions being considered for application in space nuclear power reactors is a binary alloy of molybdenum containing approximately 10-15 weight percent rhenium. Rhenium additions of up to 50 wt% have been shown to improve the low temperature ductility of recrystallized molybdenum. Klopp and Witzke have also shown similar behavior in dilute molybdenum-rhenium alloy sheet and rod containing 11-14 wt% rhenium. Although rhenium additions are beneficial in lowering the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature in recrystallized material, little information is available on the behavior of welded material. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of inert-gas-tungsten-arc-welding (GTAW) on the ductile-to-brittle transition behavior of molybdenum-13 wt% rhenium alloy sheet
