Doubly charged molecular ions of methane

  • 1. Royal Society, Swansea (UK). Research Unit

Description

Doubly charged molecular ions of methane and methane-d4 were formed in a double focusing mass spectrometer by the charge stripping technique. Their life-times are greater than 3 μs. The double ionization energy of methane was determined to be 30.6 eV, which is in contrast to the previoulsy reported value of 40.7 eV, obtained by the Auger spectroscopy method. (orig.)
