Radiation induced processes in moss cells

Description

The moss F.h. shows apical growth in the protonema cells which spread radially from the spor. Every apical daughter cell during the state of 'Caulonema' and just before in the state of 'Caulonema Primanen' initiates cell division as soon as more than twice the length of the mother cell is reached. All this allows to follow radiation effects in single cells conveniently. UV irradiation on the range of 254 nm and 280 nm delivered at different parts of the cell area delays cell division markedly may suppress it, and is able to stop the process of growing in relation to the delivered dose and to the irradiated area as well. In case of irradiation of the area next to where the membrane is just being formed - that is to say next to the phragmoplast - the new membrane will be wrongly oriented. In particular giant cells are occurring in the case of nucleus irradiation during early prophase. (orig./GSE)

Abstract (German)

Das Moss Funaria hygrametrica zeigt Spitzenwachstum in den Protonemazellen, die strahlenfoermig von der Spore ausgehen. Jede apikale Tochterzelle teilt sich im 'Caulonema'-Stadium kurz vor dem Stadium 'Caulonema Primanen', sobald die zweifache Laenge der Mutterzelle ueberschritten ist. Dadurch lassen sich Strahlenwirkungen in einzelnen Zellen gut beobachten. Die UV-Bestrahlung verschiedener Zellbereiche mit 254 nm und 280 nm verlangsamt die Zellteilung erheblich und kann sie sogar unterdruecken oder - in Abhaengigkeit von der Strahlungsdosis und dem bestrahlten Zellbereich - den Wachstumsprozess unterbrechen. Wird der Bereich neben der gerade entstehenden Zellmembran - d.h. neben dem Phragmoplast - bestrahlt, so ist die neue Membran falsch orientiert. Besonders haeufig sind Riesenzellen bei der Kernbestrahlung in der fruehen Prophase. (orig./AK)
