Creation of fine structure by magnetic fields

Creators

  • 1. St. Andrews Univ., Scotland

Description

Some causes of magnetic structuring, including kinematic concentration, magnetoconvection and convective collapse for photospheric tubes, chromospheric fine structure (merging levels, spicules, waves in magnetic tubes), and thermal instability for coronal loops are discussed. Magnetic structuring is evident in the photosphere in the form of flux tubes so that the atmoshere is divided into strong-field media. In the corona, the magnetic field dominates all other forces and structuring consists of density and temperature inhomogeneities. 51 references
