Description
The mechanism of polymer destruction under the action of UV- and γ-radiation is studied by an example of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). PMMA specimens (disks 20 mm in diameter and 2-6 mm thick) were irradiated at 300 K in air by a 60Co source at dose rate 1.2 Gy/s by 80 kGy successive doses upto total dose of 400 kGy. It is shown that no low-molecular products are formed when γ-irradiating PMMA. Absorption spectra of irradiated PMMA without additives and with propanol ones are presented. Propanol additives increase PMMA resistance to γ-radiation, that can be explained by vibrational cross-relaxation between macromolecules and molecules of additives
