Rate constant for reaction of hydroxyl radicals with bicarbonate ions

  • 1. Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., Chalk River, Ontario. Chalk River Nuclear Labs.

Description

The rate constant for reaction of hydroxyl radicals with the bicarbonate ion has been determined to be 8.5 x 106 dm3 mol-1 s-1. This value was calculated from: the measured rate of formation of the CO3- radical in pulsed electron irradiation of bicarbonate solutions over the pH range 7.0 to 9.4; the pK for the equilibrium HCO3- = CO32-+ H+; and the rate constant for hydroxyl radicals reacting with the carbonate ion.
