Fuel for HTGR type reactor
Description
Purpose: To relieve damage due to radiation during operation by using fissile metals (e.g. U, Pu, Th) or their alloys as fuel element, covering the element with a tube of isotropic graphite and canning it. Constitution: A fuel element made of fissile metals or their alloys is sealed within a graphite tube, the tube being so designed that it can withstand the pressure of gases formed by the fission reaction. The tube is covered with a can made of one of heat-resisting aloys (e.g. Ni alloys), high-melting metals (e.g. Nb, Mo) or their alloys. The sheath-like can fits snugly with the graphite tube, and the openings are sealed with a cover made of the same metal. (Yoshihara, H.)
