Structure of neutron stars

Description

Structure of neutron stars consisting of a cold and catalyzed superdense matter were investigated by integrating the equations for hydrostatic equilibrium based on the General Relativity theory. The equations of state were obtained with the help of semiempirical nuclear mass formulae. A large phase transition was found between the nuclear and subnuclear density regions. The density phase transition points were calculated as 6.2 x 1011 and 3.8 x 1013 g/cm3. Due to such a large phase transition, the equation of state practically consists of two parts: The nuclear and subnuclear phases wich are in contact under the thermodynamical equilibrium at the corresponding pressure. Some macroscopic properties of neutron stars are discussed. (Author)

Abstract (Portuguese)

Admitindo fria e catalizada a materia superdensa (∼1014g/cm3), determina-se a estrutura das estrelas de neutrons, integrando as equacoes de equilibrio hidrostatico, derivadas da Relatividade Geral. Obteve-se a equacao de estado com o auxilio de formulas semi-empiricas de massa nuclear. Observou-se uma larga transicao de fase entre a regiao de densidade subnuclear e o dominio de densidade hiperonica. Os pontos da transformacao foram calculados como sendo 6,2 x 1011 e 3,8 x 1013 g/cm3. A presenca de tal transicao de fase significa que a equacao de estado, obtida pelo modelo proposto, consiste predominantemente de duas fases, a nuclear e a subnuclear, bem como implica na existencia de um estado da materia em que as duas fases, na pressao correspondente, se encontram em contato e em equilibrio termodinamico. Discutem-se tambem algumas propriedades macroscopicas das estrelas de neutrons. (Autor)
