A Rapid Method for Analysis of Strontium-90 in Radioactive Liquid Waste by Cerenkov Radiation Counting Technique

  • 1. Waste Management Division, Office of Atomic Energy for Peace, Bangkok (Thailand)

Description

A rapid method for determination of 90Sr via its daughter 90Y in aqueous sample was developed, utilizing the principle of direct Cerenkov Radiation counting. This technique is applicable for beta particles exhibiting maximum energies greater than 0.263 MeV. in aqueous solution. The influence of quenching on the counting efficiency of 90Sr was also investigated. The method could be applied on the analysis of 90Sr in a low-level radioactive liquid waste in the presence of a weak beta emitter such as 137Cs. The analytical results of 90Sr by Cerenkov Radiation counting techniques revealed a high accuracy and were in good agreement with the conventional method. The detection limit for a 15-m L sample under this experimental conditions and a counting interval of 30 minutes was 5.15 Bq/L
