Waste management generated in laboratory of radiopharmaceuticals fractionation

  • 1. INGEFISIC INGENERIA SPA Santiago (Chile)

Description

Solid waste from the radiopharmaceutical fractionation laboratory is a product of Isotope manipulation such as: I-131, Tc-99m and Lu-177. The first step in managing waste is the segregation of material in containers located in different areas of the laboratory where the fractionation is carried out, which have transparent plastic bags to be differentiated from common trash and are identified for each isotope. On the other hand, using the surface contamination values allowed to the public for the aforementioned isotopes, the Detector efficiency for different emitters and a graphical user interface in MATLAB can be obtain the number of days the waste must remain in the storage warehouse until decay to the limit required for the public and the value to release the waste as common garbage. The Values obtained are: for I-131 52 CPS, for Tc-99m 309 CPS and for Lu-177 515 CPS. With the probe of contamination 44-9 of the LUDLUMS brand, the maximum value in CPS of the surface of the package is measured which has been previously compacted. The stored package is identified with a label which Express: the person responsible for the management, the isotope and the measurement and release date. The importance of this method, which was designed by the radiation protection unit INGEFISIC, is that it allows storage waste in the necessary (real) time unlike recommended in previous years, where set a minimum of 10 half lives for each isotope.
