Electrostatic trap for ions from a laser-initiated plasma

  • 1. Yale Univ., New Haven, Conn. (USA)

Description

Ions created by pulsed laser irradiation of a solid target have been confined in the electrostatic potential well accompanying intense electron emission from the target. Plasma produced in this manner have nsub(e)>1013 cm-3, and tau up to 1200 μsec. Measurements are described to support the claim of electrostatic confinement and a supporting theory is summarized.
