Three-port perineal sparing technique
Description
This paper reviews acute morbidity and treatment results of patients with low-lying pelvic malignant neoplasms treated with a three-port technique developed at our institution. The records of 101 patients treated with the perineal sparing technique were retrospectively reviewed. This group consisted of patients with rectal, anal, cervical, vaginal, urethral, and vulval cancer. This unique treatment arrangement consists of the corporation of three fields, antero-posterior opposed and a direct perineal port. With the utilization of a standard lead compensator, a near-homogeneous dose is administered to the pelvis and perineum. This approach allows the treatment beams to enter the tissue perpendicularly and prevents hot spots at the convergence of all three fields. Perineal irritation was graded on a toxicity scale, grade 0 indicating minimal irritation, no treatment; grade 1, mild/moderate irritation, treated conservatively; and grade 2, severe irritation, treatment break required
