The extraction of molybdenum(VI) from perchloric acid solution by tri-n-butyl phosphate

  • 1. Stellenbosch Univ. (South Africa). Dept. of Chemistry

Description

The extraction of molybdenum(VI) by tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) from 1 M NaClO4 medium has been investigated as a function of molybdenum concentration (10-4 to 10-2 M) in the pHsub(c) range 0.7 to 3.2. At molybdenum(VI) concentration > approx. 5 x 10-4 M a polynuclear species, which has been identified as the Mo6O192- ion, predominates in the TBP phase. At very low molybdenum(VI) concentration (< 10-4 M) mononuclear species predominate. A conditional formation constant for the hexanuclear species in the organic phase (0.15 M HClO4) has been determined, i.e. K = (1.3 +- 0.4) x 1020. (author)
