Effects of U-236 and other uranium isotopes in HTGR fuel cycle
Description
The HTGR utilizes thorium as the fertile material and fully enriched uranium as the makeup feed material. Recycle of the bred 233U is planned for the late 1980s. The bred 233U contains trace quantities of 232U whose daughter products emit a gamma field which makes necessary remote handling of the 233U. The discharged feed material is about 30% enriched in 235U and is recycled once more through the reactor before being permanently retired. This mode of operation limits the buildup of 236U in the system. Full recycle of all uranium would lead to undesirable fuel cost penalties and would increase requirements for ore and separative work.
