Surface temperature response of carbon materials to disruption-like heat loads

Description

The surface temperature response of materials under short pulse high heat loads, as anticipated in future fusion devices, is investigated experimentally and numerically. Surface temperature measurements for 10 ms laser and electron beam heat loads are presented. Numerical calculations include a more detailed study of the effect of the penetration depth of high energy electrons in matter on surface temperature evolution, melting and evaporation. Comparison of available thermophysical material data and measured thermal responses show reasonable correlation. (orig.)
