Carbon mitigation potential in the building sector

This article, written by Suzana Khan, is about the carbon mitigation potential in the building sector. Indeed, building accounted for more than 1/3 of global CO2 emissions (direct, indirect, and embodied). With population increasing and the growth of urban areas, especially in developing countries, it becomes necessary to find a solution. More than half of the world's population now live in urban areas. By 2050, this figure will rise to 2/3. It is estimated that 75% of the housing stock that will exist in 2050 in developing countries is yet to be built, so there is a huge opportunity to build it differently. The author of the article presents the idea of using bamboo, a sustainable material, in order to reduce carbon emissions and act as anthropogenic CO2 removals. (author)
Abstract (French)
Cet article, ecrit par Suzana Khan, porte sur le potentiel d'attenuation des emissions de carbone dans le secteur de l'immobilier. En effet, l'immobilier represente plus d'1/3 des emissions mondiales de CO2 (directes, indirectes et incarnees). Avec l'augmentation de la population et la croissance des zones urbaines, en particulier dans les pays en developpement, il devient necessaire de trouver une solution. Plus de la moitie de la population mondiale vit desormais en zone urbaine. D'ici 2050, ce chiffre passera aux 2/3. On estime que 75 % du parc immobilier qui existera en 2050 dans les pays en developpement est encore a construire, il y a donc une enorme opportunite de le construire differemment. L'auteur de l'article presente donc l'idee d'utiliser le bambou, un materiau durable, afin de reduire les emissions de carbone et d' agir comme un absorbeur de CO2 anthropique.
