Carbon mitigation potential in the building sector

This article, written by Suzana Khan, is about the carbon mitigation potential in the building sector. Indeed, building accounted for more than 1/3 of global CO₂ emissions (direct, indirect, and embodied). With population increasing and the growth of urban areas, especially in developing countries, it becomes necessary to find a solution. More than half of the world's population now live in urban areas. By 2050, this figure will rise to 2/3. It is estimated that 75% of the housing stock that will exist in 2050 in developing countries is yet to be built, so there is a huge opportunity to build it differently. The author of the article presents the idea of using bamboo, a sustainable material, in order to reduce carbon emissions and act as anthropogenic CO₂ removals. (author)
