Segregation of Y to grain boundaries in Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ scales formed on ODS alloys
Description
Commercial, oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) alloys, MA754 and MA956, were oxidized at 10000C in Ar-5%)/sub 2/ and in pure O/sub 2/, respectively. The microstructures and compositions of the Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ scales formed on these alloys were studied by STEM. Using EDX analysis, concentration profiles for Y and Ti across grain boundaries in the scales were measured, which demonstrated strong segregation of Y and Ti to the oxide grain boundaries. Particles of Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and mixed Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ were found in both scales, along with oxide particles that contained both Y and Ti. the effects of the segregation of Y to oxide grain boundaries on the rates and mechanisms of oxidation, on the scale microstructures, and on scale adhesion are discussed
