Description
The displacements and intensity of charge transfer (oxygen to lanthanum) satellites of lanthanum 3d, 4d, and 4p levels are found to be different for La2O3 and La2CuO4, while they are the same for other ABO3 perovskites and La2O3. This difference is caused by the increased possibility of 'mixed configuration' for lanthanum ions in La2CuO4 due to d/sub z2//sup 2/ level of half of copper ions intersecting the Fermi level. The effect of the changes in the geometry of the environment of the cations is also reflected in the asymmetric nature of the O(1s) peak in La2CuO4 which is known to contain different types of M-O bonds.
