Spark counting of particle damage tracks in neutron studies

Description

The aim of this work is to examine the possibility of using the method of spark counting of particle tracks with the aid of AIST instruments and Soviet polymer foils for measuring neutron fluences and neutron spectrometry. To do this they must have information about the sensitivity of the polymer foils to fission fragments as a function of the type of foil and the conditions of its chemical treatment as well as about the sensitivity of the foils to alpha particles and neutrons. Information of this kind is available but the values of the sensitivity depend strongly on the specific type of foil, the conditions of its treatment, and the method of track counting. In view of this, experiments were performed to determine the sensitivity of polymer foils to charged and neutral particles and on the basis of the results they developed and fabricated a set of neutron detectors
