Full text: 40 years ago the basics of the radiolysis of water had just been established by steady-state experiments, and pulse-radiolysis was conceived but not born. This paper considers the place of radiation chemistry in the tertiary chemistry curriculum, and some of the contributions it has made to chemistry and biochemistry, somewhat coloured by personal experience as a teacher and itinerant researcher over these last 40 years
