USSR power reactor programme

  • 1. UKAEA Headquarters, London
  • 2. UKAEA Safety and Reliability Directorate, Culcheth

Description

Nuclear power is essential to the economy of the USSR. At the end of 1985 their total nuclear generating capacity was 26 GWe (15% of the total electricity production). The nuclear generating capacity is expected to double by 1990 and be increased five fold by the year 2000, with two main types of power reactor, the RBMK (boiling water, pressure tube, graphite-moderated) reactor, such as was the Chernobyl-4 unit, and the VVER. Both types of reactors in service and under construction in the USSR are listed. There has been no change in the USSR's policy of developing nuclear power following the Chernobyl accident. However, once the RBMK reactors under construction are finished (Chernobyl 5 and 6 may not be completed) the programme will then change to build VVER units. (U.K.)
