Determination of the membrane potential in bacterial membrane vesicles from the accumulation of N-methyldeptropine
Description
The use of the lipophilic cation N-methyldeptropine (MDT) for Δpsi measurements in bacterial membrane vesicles is described. This compound can be synthesized in radioactive form by a very simple procedure. Two related compounds, N-methyltropine (MT) and N-methylatropine (NMA) were also investigated to get more information about the properties of an organic cation that determine its permeability across the bacterial membrane and to act as a Δpsi probe.
