Production of uranium tetrafluoride

Description

The patent describes the production of uranium tetrafluoride, which is used in fission fuel processing. The method involves an aqueous uranyl sulphate solution containing sulphuric acid, which is reduced by electrolysis to produce, on heating, a precipitate of uranous sulphate as the tetrahydrate. The precipitate is dissolved in dilute hydrofluoric acid (HF), heated (preferably to at least 900C) and more HF is added to precipitate hydrated UF4. (U.K.)
