Completion and initial experiments of JT-60

Description

The construction of the main part of JT-60 was completed on April 3, 1985, which was started as the central project aiming at the attainment of critical plasma condition in the 'Second stage nuclear fusion research and development project' decided in July, 1975. Thereafter, the generation of the first plasma was successfully accomplished on April 8, and plasma experiment was smoothly advanced, thus the first period Joule experiment was finished at the end of June. JT-60 is a tokamak type nuclear fusion experiment facility aiming at producing the hydrogen plasma in the physically equivalent state to the D - T plasma at zero output. The constitution of the JT-60 and its main particulars are shown. The plasma current is 2.7 MA, the time of duration is up to 10s, the heat input of neutral particle injection is 20 MW, and high frequency heating input is 10 MW. The tokamak plasma produced in the JT-60 can be controlled by the diverter configuration using magnetic limiter coils in addition to the control by fixed limiter configuration. The progress of the construction of the JT-60 is reported. The Joule experiment only by the resistance heating using the current in plasma is expected to be carried out in the first half of fiscal year 1986. The results of the first step experiment are reported. (Kako, I.)
