Oxidation of the cyclohexadienyl radical by metal ions

  • 1. Mount Vernon Hospital, Northwood (UK). Gray Lab.

Description

The rates of oxidation of the cyclohexadienyl radical by metal ions in water have been measured. The bimolecular rate constants and corresponding reduction potentials are presented for: Fe(C2O4)33-; Cu(H2O)62+; Fe(H2O)63+; and Ce4+.nH2O. Oxidation of the cyclohexadienyl radical by V(H2O)63+ and Cr(H2O)63+ ions was not observed. It is suggested that the reduction potential of the cyclohexadienyl radical lies between -0.25 V and 0 V.
