Description
This paper describes a systems analysis tool that is being developed with Teledyne Brown Engineering funds to address top-level system cost and safety issues associated with the storage, transportation and disposal of high-level spent fuel from a network of nuclear power plants. STRANDNET is described in terms of its generic output results plus an illustrative example comparing two hypothetical radioactive waste management systems, both using Multi-Purpose Canisters but one system with and one without a Monitored Retrievable Storage facility. Although tailored specifically to address current US Department of Energy concerns, the STRANDNET approach applies to any waste management network where the overall cost and risks of operation are desired
