Plane strain fracture toughness of unalloyed alpha phase plutonium

Description
The plane-strain fracture toughness (Ksub(Ic)) of unalloyed alpha-phase plutonium was determined by tests on fatigue-precracked compact-tensile specimens. The values of Ksub(Ic) were 11.6 Ksi√in. at -34 C, 10.7 Ksi√in. at 25 C, and 9.6 Ksi√in. at 74 C (12.8 MPa√m at 239 K, 11.8 MPa√m at 298 K, and 10.6 MPa√m at 347 K). Compared with more common metals, alpha-phase plutonium has an extremely low toughness. The increase in Ksub(Ic) with increasing temperature was not expected. (Auth.)
