Absolute Electron-Impact Cross Section for Stable Anion Formation from CF3Cl Isolated in Solid Kr

Description
We report the first measurements on the electron energy dependence of the total cross section for stable anion formation within a solid lattice. Resonant attachment of electrons to CF3Cl isolated within a multilayer Kr film produces CF3Cl - and Cl- with a maximum cross section of 1.1x10-16 cm2 at ∼0.7 eV , which is greater than that for the same process at the Kr surface and in the gas by a factor of 25 and 64, respectively. These enhancements are primarily due to the effects of induced polarization on the transient CF3Cl - ion. copyright 1997 The American Physical Society
