Antagonistic effects of manganese on cadmium cytotoxicity
Description
The interactions between MnCl2 and CdCl2 were studied in the following cell lines: human embryonic fibroblasts FH, human portio carcinoma line HeLa, Chinese hamster peritoneal cells B14F28, and L-A, a subline of L 929 mouse fibroblasts. In all cells studies Mn protects against Cd effects on proliferation, viability, LDH release, and lactic acid production. With increasing atomic ratio of Mn: Cd the protection is enhanced. Cadmium uptake of cells incubated with 115mCd-labeled CdCl2 decreases significantly in the presence of MnCl2. Thus the protective effect of Mn on Cd cytotoxicity is to a great part due to the inhibition of cellular Cd uptake
